Jean Shepherd had an all night a radio program I used to listen to when I was in college. He would frequently start his program saying, over a bizarre piece of music: "Here he comes, 20th century man. Trudging over the hill. Will he make it?" Well, we made it through the 20th century, but will we make it through the 21st?
Will it be possible for enough of us to shift our consciousness from greed, pride, attachment, from focusing entirely on ourselves, our family, our business, our country, our korass, to embracing the rest of humanity as fellow human beings? The clock is ticking away. There is a sense of urgency. Yet, at the same time, how do you maintain, teach, strive for, and exemplify higher consciousness urgently? It is almost an oxymoron. Would that it could be simple and clear like sounding the horn cry of Buckland in the Lord of the Rings: "Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake! Awake!"
How can we tell our story in such a way as to be heard? Who shall be the one to do so? What medium shall we use? Will there be many voices? Or will it need one clear voice? Or, shall we be heard at all? The scariest poem I know is "the Hollow Men (by TS Elliot)," with its scathing chorus:
This is the way the world ends.
This is the way the world ends.
Not with a bang, but a whimper
Einstein’s prediction that World War III will start in the Middle East seems to be in the process of unfolding. The clock is ticking away. Please wake up, dear sisters and brothers. Put aside your isolation, your doubts, hesitations, fears, and join with others to make common cause. There is an old song in my spiritual community, which goes:
Now is the time
Now is the time
Now is the time to come to the aid of Mother Earth
Open up your heart
Open up your heart
Let the music start
Open up your voice
Rejoice, rejoice
Now is the time. If you know what to do, do it. If you don’t know what to do, come to our Creating Our Future Memorial Weekend Workshop. By the end of the workshop, you will know what to do.
