07/19/2002 Entry: "7/18/02 Developing a game plan"

How do we get from here to there? What would "there" be? What would it look like? How can we develop a coherent enough vision of the minimum we need to achieve to get out of our current mess, without becoming overly elaborate in the vision building process?

Recently, I had convened a meeting to address the question of how to change the tone of mass US demonstrations, so that they could become less self-righteously anger based, and more inclusive. I had led a very brief visualization, which had us see glimpses of a coherent collective movement and how we might get there. Then we asked participants to report one they saw, learned, or experienced. Paul Ray (author of "Cultural Creatives") was among the participants. He reported that he saw a movement in which he could feel the future pulling us forward, rather than our pushing away from the past.

I think it is necessary to develop a coherent vision of the future, without getting overly technical or elaborate, and without, somehow, getting bogged down in arguments over the virtues of potential alternative lifestyles, systems, technologies, etc. We need to have some collective shared credible vision that we can feel ourselves working towards, which can inspire and uplift us. We also, most emphatically, need to have something to work towards rather than just working against the current disorder.
